The state in which opposing forces or processes are in a balance such that no overall change occurs in the system. In Sedimentation Equilibrium experiments the flow of a solute due to the gravitational field produced by the ultracentrifuge is balanced by the flow due to diffusion. This balance is measured as sigma (σ), the exponent of the slope of a stable concentration gradient.
